Join us for Sensational Sentences, a fun and interactive three-day writing workshop designed to make sentence building simple, exciting, and rewarding! Perfect for young writers, this camp focuses on crafting impactful sentences with ease and enjoyment. Day 1: Students will explore the questions: What is a sentence? What is a sentence NOT? Sure, a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with the proper punctuation…but it is so much more! Targeted practice using writing samples will help empower students to identify a good sentence versus a sentence “want-to-be”. Be prepared to use highlighters and stickers to notate like professional kid editors. Day 2: Students will learn how to craft and compose knockout sentences in their own field journals. Topics like sentence length and structure and imagery will be central discussion points. When should a sentence be short, clear and concise? When should a sentence POP off the page and bring writing to life? Effective writing definitely involves the senses. A mindful walk around the Giving Garden will offer the proper inspiration for pre-writing brainstorming practices that set up students for a successful writing experience. Day 3: It’s time to practice putting the pencil to the page! Students will write and orally read their own writing samples to themselves as well as to their peers. Does this sentence make sense? How does it flow and feel? Did I follow my sentence rules? Developing a writer's ear (instead of a swimmer's ear) and learning to fall in love with the writing process is this session’s top summer goal! Instructor: Kim Jensen
