About This Activity

Description

This class teaches the basics of martial etiquette, drawing and sheathing the sword, basic cuts, the history of the Japanese sword, sword terminology and the basic kata of the AUSKF the governing body of iaido in the U.S. Students should wear comfortable clothes - sweat pants, tee shirts, etc. We will provide the practice swords and belts needed.
Iaido is a Japanese sword art that dates back almost 500 years. Iaido emphasizes the draw, cut and re-sheathing of the sword in one fluid motion. Not only does iaido teach the movements of sword combat but it also teaches balance, concentration, attention to detail and physical and mental awareness.
Instructor: Dan Keding has been studying and teaching iaido in Urbana for twenty-four years. He has attended workshops and seminars in the U.S., Canada and Japan and has studied with some of the most respected teachers in iaido. He feels that the martial arts should be available to all people and that the discipline that is learned is valuable in all endeavors.
