Dads are the best teachers. They run down the street by our side while we learn to ride a bike. They wait patiently for us to make our first basket, touchdown or goal and cheer the loudest when we do. They are role models, master chefs, sports enthusiasts and heroes. Father's Day is the perfect chance to give back to our dads and show them how much they're loved. Below are eight fun activities to do with the whole family that any dad is sure to love.
Put Together a Family Field Day
1 of 9
Ask your dad what his favorite field day activities are: such as potato sack races, relay races and egg tosses. Have fun with the whole family while tied together for the three-legged race. Make some kind of a prize to hand out to the winning participants.
Pick your dad's favorite sport and make a tournament out of it. Some members of the family can be referees, and some can be coaches, but make sure everyone is involved. For added fun, make a trophy to give to the winner.
Find a local biking trail and take the family on a ride. Have the end of the ride be a park, lake or beach so you can have fun with the family before you head back. Bring along water, snacks and something you can throw around in the park.
Most cities have public ponds and lakes that everyone is allowed to fish in. Take dad to one of these and just relax. It'll show your dad how much you enjoy just hanging out with him and talking.
If you have enough room, pitch a tent in your backyard and have a full-blown camping trip. Roast marshmallows on the grill and make s'mores, then gather around inside the tent and tell campfire stories.
Make all of your dad's favorite foods and drive over to a public park, beach or lake for a lunch he'll love. Take a picnic blanket, spread out the feast and enjoy. Be sure to take a Frisbee or football to throw around while you're down there.
Dads are often the everyday heroes of our lives. Show him that you think so by grabbing your video camera and acting out a short action movie—make sure to make your dad the hero, though. Think Batman, Spiderman, or even Superdad.
Put a sheet up in your driveway or behind your house, and have a movie night outside (Projectors can be purchased for as low as $30). Make popcorn on the stove, buy your dad's favorite candy and have a marathon of his all-time favorite movies.
